Urgent Action: NO Extraction License to Tahoe Resources!

It is a crucial moment to take action in defense of communities threatened by mining in Guatemala.

Before January 11, 2012, Guatemala’s Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources must decide whether to allow Tahoe Resources to develop a silver and gold mine in the province of Santa Rosa. Local communities have not been consulted about the plans and the required environmental assessment has not been made available to the public despite a formal request under Guatemala’s access to information law.
Under international human rights standards, Guatemala must consult populations that could be affected by the mining project and obtain the consent of indigenous peoples who could be affected.
Please click here to urge Guatemala NOT to issue an exploitation license to Tahoe Resources until these communities have been adequately consulted, or in the case of indigenous peoples, until they have given their free, prior and informed consent.
